Grounding yourself is vital for your wellbeing and to feel balanced and calm. Read here what it means to ground yourself, why it is important and 15 of the best ways to do it.

If you tend to be in your head a lot (this might apply even extra if you are an air sign like me!), then learning how to ground yourself will be such a relief. I always feel instantly better when I apply any of the below mentioned techniques to feel grounded.

Grounding Yourself Meaning

Grounding yourself means to consciously connect yourself to the earth. You do this by letting yourself and your body getting back to the present moment and focusing on your body being connected to the earth.

To feel healthy and balanced you need to be grounded. If you are not grounded enough, you can experience being stuck in thoughts, not feeling connected or aware of what is happening in your body, feeling stressed, anxious or depressed.

You can ground yourself by doing a physical acitivity or going out into nature, but you can also use visualization (f.e imagine your connection to the earth by standing up strong and imagining roots growing out of your feet).

What Is Earthing?

Earthing basically means discharging energy to the earth. This applies to electrical earthing as well as to grounding (earthing) yourself physically.

With electrical earthing a path is provided for excess (faulty) energy to be discharged to the earth to avoid you getting an electrical shock.

When you are earthing or grounding yourself physically, you are doing just that. You are connecting your body to the earth so excess (to you faulty) energy can be discharged and given back to the earth.

What Happens When Your Ground Yourself?

When you ground yourself your body gets back into its natural state of being instead of thinking (we are called human beings after all). Your nervous system starts to relax and you can go back into a state of presence, connectedness and calm.

Why Grounding Yourself Is So Important

Grounding yourself is so important (even vital) to our wellbeing because as humans we are strongly connected to the earth. It is where we come from and it is where we feel like ourselves. If we are not grounded, we can therefore never feel whole.

If the body is out of balance there is an energetic block that needs to be taken away. If the disbalance is in the root chakra (our lowest, most earthly chakra), it can be brought back into balance by doing grounding activities, as described in the list below.

Don’t underestimate the importance of the root chakra and your grounding. If the basis is not steady, you are building on a weak foundation and your body will not be able to fully heal itself.

If you feel stressed, anxious or depressed and you are not sure why, then try out some of the following ways to ground yourself and see what happens.

15 Ways To Ground Yourself

These are 15 ways to ground yourself. If you know any other ways, share in the comments!

1. Do A Root Chakra Meditation

Try this 10-minute guided root chakra meditation online or set a timer and create your own. Play some root chakra singing bowl music, or try to add root chakra affirmations.

You can also add essential oils that resonate with the root chakra (such as cedar) or use crystals for extra power (try aragonite or smoky quartz).

2. Do Some Gardening

Gardening is one of my favorite ways for grounding. Even a short gardening session instantly connects you back to nature.

3. Lay Down In The Grass Or On The Ground

Lay down where you can, if possible in nature or in the grass, but at home also works fine. Feel how your body is supported by the earth, and how you are connected to the earth.

Imagine roots are growning out of your body all the way to the center of the earth. Imagine how it recharges you and feel how your excess energy is released back to the earth.

4. Walk Barefoot

Take your shoes off and feel the earth below your feet. You can do this anywhere. Be conscious of how the ground feels and how the heat or cold runs up trough your body.

5. Eat Root Vegetables

Eathing root vegetables such as potatoes, beetroot or carrots naturally connects you to the earth. If you feel ungrounded, cook yourself a nice hearty meal. You will instantly feel better after eating it.

6. Go To The Beach

Go to the beach (or to a park or lake if there is no beach near), take your shoes off and breathe in the ocean air. Listen to the seagulls, walk through the water and relaaaaaaax.

7. Open The Windows

If you are at home, open the windows to let the fresh air in.

8. Listen And Dance To Drumming Music

The sound of the drum naturally makes the body connect to the earth. It is related to our heartbeat and the most primal musical sound we know.

9. Root Chakra Chant

The chant of LAM is associated with the root chakra. It creates a vibration in the body that relaxes and resets your root. This is a great short meditation with chant to try.

10. Go For A Walk In Nature

Take in your surroundings while you walk slowly. Feel the soil under your feet, listen to the sounds and notice what it smells like.

11. Express Your Gratitude

Feel and express your gratitude for how your body is there for you, and how strong it actually is.

12. Burn Essential Tree Oil

Essential tree oil like cedar, tea tree or pine instantly gives you that forest sensation. I love this smell in the house as it instantly makes me feel relaxed.

13. Do Some Grounding Yoga Exercises

Do some yoga exercises that are connected to the root chakra (such as mountain pose or Savasana) or try this online root chakra yoga session.

14. Drink Your Favorite (Herbal) Tea

Drink your favorite natural or herbal tea and really savour it. Coffee made out of Dandelion roots also works great.

15. Give Yourself Reiki

You can try an online short version of a Reiki self-treatment to try it out. Reiki is a great way to feel into your body and signal where the stress is and where it needs healing. It calms down the nervous system. You can also book a Reiki treatment.

How To Ground Yourself For Reiki

Before a Reiki session, you can ground yourself by feeling how your feet (or body) are connecting to the earth and imagine roots growing out of them.

Imagine the energy is flowing through you from the crown chakra, down through your body, and out through the soles of your feet. Imagine any excess energy being removed and released back into the earth.

When You Find Grounding Difficult

Grounding yourself can be difficult when you are tired, emotional or just very sensitive to external energies. In that case, try to first get some rest (if tiredness is the cause).

If you are leaving the house or know where you are going the energy will be very intense, do a pre-grounding exercise before entering the situation.

Give yourself some Reiki, do a meditation and imagine filling your energy field with white light and imagine there is an egg or a shield of light surrounding you. This really helps to not soak in too much external energy.
