Are you ready to explore the most powerful tool to change your life? Do you want to learn to get more control over your mind, or just go on an epic adventure? Are you ready to fly? In Lucid Dreaming Explained: A Beginner’s Guide, you will find everything you need to get started with lucid dreaming!

Since I started to intensify my meditation practice, I kept having lucid dreams. Almost every night during a few weeks in a row. This got me intrigued to dive into lucid dreaming and explore how this works. Here is what I’ve found..

Lucid Dreaming Meaning

When you are lucid dreaming, you are in a dream while you are consciously aware that you are dreaming. You are fully asleep while your conscious mind is active and aware that it is in a dream.

Isn’t that amazing? 😮😱

We all dream while we are asleep, but most of those dreams, we don’t remember. When you are dreaming, most of the time, you are not consciously there. Mostly, the dreaming happens in your subconscious mind.

The front part of your brain, that controls your sense of self, is normally switched off while you are dreaming. Therefore you normally aren’t conscious of actually having dreamt a dream at all..

Lucid dreaming meaning

Have you ever experienced that moment where you wake up from a dream, remember it, and then very quickly forget about it? That is a brief moment where you noticed the conscious mind connecting to the subconscious mind.

Now, when you are lucid dreaming, this front part of the brain is switched on WHILE you keep dreaming. You are now consciously interacting with your own subconscious! 😎

👉 People sometimes go through years of therapy, hypnosis, use of psychedelics, and more, to get to the point where they can consciously connect with their subconscious, and trying to understand what is going on in their psyche. And now you know you can do this in your sleep..!

Ok, it may take some courage to actually want to connect to the hidden dark part of the iceberg that our subconscious mind actually is.. (See the picture below) But if you have that courage, this can open doors to a whole new world! ⛵

Lucid dreaming explained a beginners guide iceberg
The part of the iceberg above the surface is your conscious mind, the part of the iceberg under the surface is your subconscious mind. Are you ready to go for a swim in these dark waters?

Why You Want To Lucid Dream

When you are in a lucid dream (more on how to get there, below in this article), you cannot control what the dream itself looks like, as that is a construct of your subconscious, but you can control what you are doing in the dream! 😄

Think of anything! It can be as crazy as you want: Try to fly, climb the Himalaya, meet your idol, or achieve your lifelong dream 🤩

Whatever you choose, be sure to keep it positive! 👈😅

–> Be aware that everything you decide to do in your dream, is a communication to your own subconscious mind, so for your own sake, don´t feed it with negativity..

Be aware that your deepest desires, emotions and fears come from your subconscious, so feeding that in a negative way is not helping you heal any of your traumas. (Any desire for angry behavior is merely a projection from the subconscious after all..)

The more you can lucid dream, the more you are able to get to know your subconscious and understand how to navigate it, and the more you will be able to heal any trauma from the past 🙌

When you are a more advanced lucid dreamer, you can try to call out past events you would like to heal and come to terms with (but the advice is to first practice with less heavy stuff and just have some fun with it).

What do you feel like doing in your dream?

Is Lucid Dreaming Actually Real?

If you are wondering if lucid dreaming is actually real, than you might be happy to know there is also plenty of scientific research done to back this up.

For example, have a look at the results of this research, where scientists succeeded to communicate with lucid dreamers in their dream. They managed to enter people’s dreams and get them to communicate back certain information.

Sounds a lot like sci fi coming true..? I love this stuff! ✨

Either way, don’t just accept this to be true or false, but try it out for yourself. Personal experience is the best way to validate this, and to actually a great opportunity to explore your own inner world!

The Benefits Of Lucid Dreaming

There are some great benefits to lucid dreaming. Here are some of them:

  • You can do it by yourself – You don’t need a hypno therapist, phycho therapist or any psychedelics to explore your mind. You can do this yourself, while you are sleeping! 😴
  • Learn about yourself – Lucid dreaming and connecting with your subconscious can help you learn more about yourself than you ever could in your waking state
  • Having fun – Lucid dreaming can be really fun. You can go on epic adventures, and experience things that you could never experience in real life! (It is kind of an extremely advanced version of VR)
  • Improve your skills – Use your dream to experience getting good at the skills you want to improve. There is a great change you will actually make this happen in real life.
  • Manifest your dreams – Like when you make use of visualization during meditations, you can use your lucid dream to manifest your dreams into reality.
  • Heal trauma – In your dream, you can try to call out to your inner child, a person, or a situation from the past, that you want to make amends with. You can then send love and good vibes to it. This is a very profound way to heal. Because you are in a deeper state than during meditation, this has a more profound effect.
  • Heal your body – Because illnesses in the body are basically stored trauma, you can use your lucid dream to express your intention to heal your body, and try to remove any pain that is causing it from your subconscious.

Disadvantages of lucid dreaming

Get Started: Lucid Dreaming Exercises

Experiencing lucid dreams more often, or experiencing them at all if you haven’t before, can take some practice. Here are some things you can do to increase the change of having a lucid dream:

  • Meditate – Meditation is a great (and maybe even essential) way to train and open your mind to lucid dreaming (Check out my Guide To Meditation, if you are new to meditation)
  • Meditate before bed – If you meditate before bed, there is a bigger chance to experience a lucid dream
  • Express your intention – When we try to communicate energetically (and our brain states are merely different energetic frequencies!), intention is everything. Have -and express- a clear intention to have a lucid dream before you go to sleep.
  • Have a dream journal next to your bed – Having this journal also expresses intent (and tells your subconscious mind that a lucid dream is important to you)
  • Have a positive mindset before going to bed – Make sure you think positive thoughts before intenting to lucid dream.
  • Think of what you want to do in your dream – Decide before going to sleep what you would like to do when you are in your lucid dream.
  • Pick a dream you would like to have – This is not necessary but can help in case you have a specific dream you would like to experience (try to not pick a situation that is very similar to your real life, so there is less chance you will confuse the two!)

To try lucid dreaming, check out the below video for some concrete steps on how to do it:

Lucid Dreaming Techniques

There are several techniques that you can try to lucid dream. Firstly check the video mentioned above here. These are some of the techniques you might like to try:

MILD –> Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams. This is a combination of expressing intention to become lucid in a certain dream that you had earlier. You can try to induce this by using a mantra.

WBTB –> Wake Back To Bed. Here you are trying to train your consciousness to stay present when you go into a REM sleep. This is done through setting an alarm clock at certain hours to control when you wake and fall asleep.

Binaural beats –> Use binaural beats to induce the lucid dream state in your brain. Listen to this 6 hour lucid dreamscape if you like to try it out.

For more details about these techniques, or to learn about other lucid dreaming techniques (there are many), check out this site.

Lucid Dreaming Meditation

If you like to use a guided meditation before going to bed, try this one:

The Disadvantages Of Lucid Dreaming

Generally, lucid dreaming is a safe thing to do. Mainly because your subconscious has its own mechanisms in place to protect your conscious mind from certain things when it is not ready to deal with them. This happens both in the waking state, as well as in the sleeping state.

Despite that, it is good to be aware of possible risks and situations that can occur around lucid dreaming. When you get started, just listen to how you feel, and don’t try to force things too much if it doesn’t feel right to you.

The Risks Of Lucid Dreaming

These are some possible risks that come with lucid dreaming:

  • Sleep deprivation – When you are trying the WBTB technique discussed earlier, and you keep waking yourself up at different times, you can cause some sleep deprivation if you do this too often. This doesn’t have to happen, but be mindful of your health at all times.
  • Sleep paralysis – Sleep paralysis happens when your conscious mind is active while your body is in sleep mode. It can feel as if you cannot move your body, which can seem very scary, but it is normal as this prevents your body from acting out everything you experience in a dream. Just be mindful this can occur. For more information on this, check out this video.
  • Going deep too quickly – When you dabble in lucid dreaming, keep it light in the beginning. Don’t start out the first night by trying to fix your heaviest past traumas.
  • Negative mindset – Always check in with yourself before trying to lucid dream. Be aware of your mindset and keep it positive.
  • Disconnection from real life – If you are really enjoying your lucid dreaming adventures, it can be tempting to loose touch with reality as this might seem more boring than everything you experience in your dream. Still try to be conscious of this and make sure to ground yourself regularly.

Lucid dreaming and nightmares

Lucid Dreaming And Nightmares

If you find yourself in a lucid nightmare, DO NOT wake up. Your subconscious is showing you a fear that it has, and this is an opportunity for you to deal with this and resolve it, rather than feeding it with emotion (and possibly making it bigger than it already is).

If you are feeling unsafe in your dream, imagine a bubble of bright light around yourself that act as a shield. You can imagine this light coming out of your heart space and radiating outwards so strongly that no evil can get past this.

You can even ask the thing that scares you in your nightmare WHY it is scaring you. You might find an answer to something you didn’t know.

At all times, try to stay calm. Practice mindful breathing, just like during a meditation, and observe any fear as a passing emotion and let it go 🎈
